How To: Jailbreak iOS 5 GM With RedSn0w 0.9.9b3a On iPad (First-Generation) [Windows]

On October 5, 2011, by Dusty

The iPhone Dev-Team today released RedSn0w 0.9.9b3a for Windows users to Jailbreak iOS 5 GM. This new version of RedSn0w features auto iOS 5 GM firmware detection to avoid having to point RedSn0w to an earlier iOS 5 beta like in version 0.9.9b2, fixes a caching bug, and adds a special bonus. If you are interested in jailbreaking tethered the iOS 5 GM firmware on your iPad, follow this step-by-step guide from iJailbreak.com.

Step 1: Download RedSn0w 0.9.9b3a for Windows using the download mirror below or through the iJailbreak Downloads Section.

Download RedSn0w 0.9.9b3 (Windows)

Step 2: Once you have downloaded RedSn0w 0.9.9b3a to your desktop, you will need to launch it. Do this now by clicking the executable file.

Step 3: With RedSn0w 0.9.9b3a up and running you will need to click the Extras button. You will now see a few buttons presented to you. The button you are interested in is the Select IPSW button. Click this now and select your devices corresponding iOS 5 GM firmware.

Step 4: Upon selecting the firmware click the back button, followed by the Jailbreak button.

Step 5: After clicking the Jailbreak button ensure that the “Install Cydia” option is checked, click the Next button and you will come to a screen where you will need to put your iPad into DFU mode. Read through and follow the instructions presented to you which is to plug in and power off your iPad and click the next button.

Step 6: When you click the next button you will need to follow the instructions presented to you to put your iPad into DFU mode.

  • Hold down Power (corner) button for 5 seconds.
  • Without releasing the Power button, also hold down the Home (bottom center) button along with the Power button for 10 seconds.
  • Without releasing the home button, stop holding down the power button for up to 15 seconds.

Step 7: After you successfully enter DFU mode RedSn0w will begin jailbreaking your iPad. DO NOT interrupt or use your computer during this time. When your iPad is finished being jailbroken it will reboot into a jailbroken state. Congratulations!

Optional: Booting Tethered - When you Jailbreak your iPad running iOS 5 GM you will have a tethered Jailbreak. Meaning in order for your iPad to turn back on you will need to boot it using RedSn0w (this applies every time your iPad looses power). To do this launch RedSn0w again and click the Extras Button > then click the Just boot button and you will simply need to put your iPad into DFU mode again.

RedSn0w 0.9.9b3a special bonus:

As a special bonus to Windows users, we’ve made it so that if you make a copy of redsn0w.exe and name it something like “justboot.exe” (anything with the word “boot” in it), it will start up in “Just Boot tethered” mode. That way you don’t have to click on any buttons at all to boot tethered! :)

Note: Yes, you need to do this every time your iPad looses power.

Congrats! You should now have a jailbroken iPad 1G running iOS 5 GM. For more tutorials visit the How To Jailbreak Section. Let us know if you have any questions below…

I’m not a novice at jailbreaking, but after doing the jailbreak from 4.3.5 to 5 GM on my IPad, I am in the infinite loop and unable to get the device to fully boot. Anyone else having the issue or can advise a solution?
