The release of the iOS 7 Untethered Jailbreak surprised us all and left a lot of people questioning why the Jailbreak was released so suddenly and unexpectedly. As last year the Evad3rs gave constant progress updates to keep us in the loop on when the Jailbreak would be released.
This year, however, even Saurik wasn’t in the loop and it has to do with many reasons.
It turns out that the rumors we heard that parts of the iOS 7 Untethered Jailbreak were sold to a third party has some truth behind it, along with the fact that there was another team working on releasing the Jailbreak first. Due to the fact that the Evad3rs spent so much time working on a Jailbreak they couldn’t afford to have their work undermined by another team.
So just who was this other team?
Although no specifics were mentioned, it turns out GeoHot was close to releasing a Jailbreak himself, which if he had beat the Evad3rs would have put him in the spotlight and the Evad3rs in the shadow.
It wasn’t all due to being first, however, GeoHot and the other teams working on releasing the Jailbreak would have utilized exploits that the Evad3rs hoped to keep away from Apple’s eyes so they could be used for future Jailbreaks.
So to wrap things up the Evad3rs released the Jailbreak today to prevent other Jailbreak teams from giving away more critical exploits for Apple to fix.
The Evad3rs also released their story of the events leading up to today’s release.
Many of you have also wondered why this jailbreak was released without Cydia and MobileSubstrate being updated for iOS 7. After we received the offer from Taig, we informed Saurik, our friend, of our decision to accept the offer. SaurikIT had been in talks with Chinese companies regarding potential partnerships, made a counteroffer. We believe they share our views on how a relationship with companies in China currently utilizing jailbreaking might benefit everyone in the community. Unfortunately, the negotiations did not work out. A few days later, we received information that SaurikIT was working with another group to release a jailbreak ahead of us. We decided to release, knowing that Cydia, MobileSubstrate, and jailbreak tweaks would be updated after a few days, just as it always has in the course of jailbreaking.
