How To: Boot A Tethered Jailbreak On iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad Using RedSn0w [Mac OS X]

On October 11, 2011, by Dusty

If you have been a part of the jailbreaking community the last little while I’m sure you have at least heard of a tethered jailbreak. If you have not, a tethered jailbreak simply means every time your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad looses power you need to plug it back into your computer (via USB) and re-run RedSn0w. While booting a tethered iDevice is not a difficult task, if you are new to the jailbreaking community you still may be unsure of the correct procedure.

If this sounds like you, you will be glad to know iJailbreak.com is providing a complete tutorial for booting your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad from a tethered jailbreak (on Mac OS X) which you can follow below.

How To Boot A Tethered Jailbreak

Step 1: Download RedSn0w for Mac OS X through the iJailbreak Downloads Section.

Step 2: Once you have downloaded RedSn0w you will need to launch it by double clicking on the redsn0w app.

Step 3: With RedSn0w up and running you will need to click the Extras button. You will now see a few buttons presented to you. The button you are interested in is the Just boot button. Click this now.

Step 4: You will come to a screen where you will need to put your iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad into DFU mode. Read through and follow the instructions presented to you which is to plug in and power off your iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad and click the Next button.

Step 5: When you click the Next button you will need to follow the instructions presented to you to put your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad into DFU mode.

  • Hold down the Power (corner) button for 5 seconds.
  • Without releasing the Power button, also hold down the Home (bottom center) button along with the Power button for 10 seconds.
  • Without releasing the home button, stop holding down the power button for up to 15 seconds.

After your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad is correctly in DFU mode you can sit back and wait for it to re-boot into a usable state.
