Hacker i0n1c’s Thoughts On Chronic-Dev Crash Reporter Tool And The iOS 5.0 Untethered Jailbreak

December 1, 2011 by Jaden Easton-Ellett 10 Comments

If you have not heard the Twitter handler @i0n1c, actually known as Stefan Esser to, thrown around then I would be surprised. i0n1c is a very skilled hacker that has given numerous presentations on hacking the iOS operating system, and more recently is one of the main authors behind the upcoming book iOS Hacker’s Handbook. He was also the brain behind the first iOS 4.3.1 Untethered Jailbreak, and numerous other Jailbreaks. Now, the reason I am bringing i0n1c up again, is because he recently shared some interesting views on relevant news circulating around the Jailbreaking community.

The first thing i0n1c commented on was, the recently released Chronic-Dev Crash Reporter tool.

Personally, I think this is more a conflict of vulneribility finding styles between P0sixNinja and i0n1c, and I wouldn’t go as far as to say using the Chronic-Dev Crash Reporter is useless. But i0n1c does try and justify his point by saying that looking at random dumps without any idea what triggered the crash is a waste of time. This is because you cannot reproduce the crash with only a crash dump report.

The second thing i0n1c commented on was just how much just how many weaknesses Apple has patched in the iOS 5.0 firmware generation.

It is for this reason that P0sixNinja was not able to take advantage of his 5 userland exploits he had discovered to provide us with an Untethered iOS 5.0/5.0.1 Jailbreak for the iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and other iDevices.

One thing is for certain, after taking into account i0n1c’s thoughts, and that is Jailbreaking is becoming increasingly harder as time goes on. Though this fact is expected and should be common knowledge, it is a good reminder to show you support for development teams such as Chronic-Dev and the iPhone Dev-Team for all of their dedication to continuing the research and development of Jailbreaking solutions. As always, please leave any questions and thoughts in the comments section below…

However many year into the future, what are the real chances that jailbreaking devices becomes impossible?

jailbreaking will never be impossible but eventually it will become to complicated and nobody will develop them.

Apple killed the jb community when they hired Nicholas Allegra. Without comex, the remaining guys are running in circles… Getting flooded with the data they’re now gathering will only add time to the whole process. Ultimately the guys at Cupertino did their homework and found it enough to cover Nick in gold to stop the jb for any A5 based iDevice. I really wished the remaining crew were up to the challenge, owning an iPad 2 I’d surely be greatful; I’m afraid it will take them years, if ever, for them to crack it. Nick being an apple employee and yet listed in the chronic dev team tweeter list just doesn’t add up from where I see it… May well be part of the reason why there is no UJB yet for iOS 5 on either the 4S or the iPad 2… Think about it

If that is the case that that dude Nick works for Apple, yet is still in the CDT twitter feed…they should release him. Who knows what he’d tell Apple now that he’s in their wallet.

I appreciate all the hard work people have put into the jailbreaking. I do not know if i  would keep my itouch 4g if i couldn’t jailbreak it. Kinda makes me wonder how many other people would not buy the devices knowing there no jailbreak. I have always been curious with programming. This kinda inspires me to learn and maybe one day actually put a helping hand in the jailbreaking community.

Well put. I am a programmer myself since 1999. I have been into iphone and ipad for years while jailbreakable. I can’t live with a totally closed ecosystem. My next step is selling off my idevices and getting the fastest android phone (samsung nexus prolly) and tablet (asus eee prime will top m all). It is the right time too. All the signs point in that direction. Especially now ICS 4 came out.
But I do think our population might make up for only 3% of the total idevice user base. That’s why they don’t care.

Add me to the crowd that is likely to move to Android if JB becomes impossible.

And I agree, comex was by far the most talented jailbreaker… with him in Apple’s pocket, it’s looking increasingly like game over.
