Media Hint Firefox / Chrome Plugin Allows For Access To Hulu, Pandora, American Netflix Content Outside The States

We really like services such as Netflix, Hulu, and Pandora that provide alternatives to both costly cable and satellite radio subscriptions, that create barriers to access, and an alternative piracy, which prevents the content creators from getting a fair shake. The problem is these services are legally constrained to keep their services out of certain markets or are forced to limit their services to comply with licensing agreements from different regions. Luckily there are workarounds for those of us left in the dark, and the latest workaround might be the easiest to use.

The easiest method we’ve seen to access Netflix‘s American library as well as Hulu, and Pandora Radio outside of the United States.

Media Hint was recently released as a plugin for Chrome and Firefox browsers, available for free in the official extension marketplaces for both browsers. All you need to do to enable Media Hint on Firefox is select Add-Ons from the menu, search for the plugin, and Install it. (Or select the appropriate extension from the links below.) From there you can go to services like Netflix, Hulu, and Pandora, which should just work.

With Media Hint you can access content on Netflix not normally available in Canada.

But does it work? From Canada, it absolutely does. With the plugin installed, Netflix happy streams shows and Movies that are otherwise not available: How I Met Your Mother, Sons Of Anarchy, FlCl, Limitless. I was able to stream an episode of the Daily Show from Hulu, instead of the god-awful Comedy Network site. And Pandora? I was streaming the Pixies and Nirvana. Everything loaded clearly and quickly.

That said, Media Hint doesn’t work with every service: Spotify wasn’t fooled by Media Hint 0.1.9 for Firefox, and sites like Google recognise my browser as Canadian. Despite the fact that Media Hint only works with a handful of websites, the Chrome Web Store warns that Media Hint can access “Your data on all websites.” You’d think they could pare it down to the few sites the service works for. With that in mind, we recommend installing Media Hint on a secondary browser that you don’t do private transactions through, just as a smart precaution. Content providers tend to block these workarounds eventually, so don’t get too attached.

Media Hint even works with Pandora radio.

I’m in Canada and while this extension seems to work for Hulu and Pandora, it doesn’t seem to be working for Netflix. The sound doesn’t sync up with the video.

Thanks for the article Mike. VPN is good if you want to hide your real location. However, about content streaming, I prefer the DNS option. Currently, I am using UnoTelly and have no speed loss which allows me HD streaming with my 10mbps connection.
