3 Secret Shipments Of Apple TVs Arrive In The U.S. Just Before Apple’s Keynote

We have heard a lot about the upcoming iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C, but what we haven’t heard much on is whether or not Apple will be refreshing the Apple TV. Despite the fact that Apple calls the Apple TV a “hobby” it usually inherits the previous generations A-Series chip when new iPhones or iPads are announced. So technically the Apple TV should receive the A6 chip at some point.

If you have been following along with the news lately around the Apple TV, Apple has been steadily updating it with new apps and channels. This could be reason enough to believe Apple is planning on updating the Apple TV on September 10th.

Today, however, we actually have a report by the global trade intelligence gurus Panjiva which states Apple has been issued three bills of landing from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for big containers filled with “set top boxes” in Apple’s name.

On August 25th, Apple received a shipment described as “Set Top Box with Communication Function” from BYD Precision Manufacture in Shenzhen, China.

On August 18th, Apple received another shipment, again from BYD, described as “Set Top Boxes.”

And on August 11th, Apple received its first shipment from BYD of “Set Top Box with Communication Function.”

These containers were anywhere from 7 to 18 tons and considering an Apple TV weighs about 1 pound that means there is about 90,000 Apple TVs inside those three shipments.

As Panjiva points out there could really be 3 possibilities with what is inside these shipments of “Set Top Boxes.” It could be Apple’s long rumored TV-focused product, a new version of the old school Apple TV or “Something that’s not particularly interesting, but that has an interesting description to throw us all off.”

I guess we will just have to wait and see what Apple has up its sleeves on September 10th.

    That’s cool.

What makes them “secret” shipments? I would assume that any and all Apple TV shipments would be listed as “set top box with communication function” on the bill of lading, because that’s precisely what it is. What is the normal shipping rate of AppleTV’s? Is this shipment markedly higher than that? I’m sure a case could be made for a refreshed Apple TV intro at the Sept 10th event, and I wouldn’t fight the argument, at all. I just think calling these shipments “secret” without explaining why is a bit linkbait-ish. And I’m sure you don’t want to be labeled as one of those sites.
