So, I know everyone is excited for iPhone OS 4 to be released, and we may even get it today, (it may have been released by the time you read this), depending on what Steve Jobs has to say at the keynote.
This is a warning to all jailbreakers and unlockers: DO NOT UPDATE RIGHT AWAY!! This is something that has to reiterated every time there is a new firmware release. If you want to keep your jailbreak and/or unlock, do not update to the official firmware until the proper jailbreak tools are released.
This warning is mostly important for people who rely on an unlock to be able to use their iPhone. The iPhone Dev Team has said there is an unlock for the current baseband and the OS 4 baseband, and they will be released sometime after OS 4 is released. You just have to wait a little while.
We also, know that the current devices can be jailbroken on iPhone OS 4, we just have to wait for the official tools. Redsn0w has already been updated to jailbreak the beta version of iPhone OS 4, so it shouldn’t be too long before we have a release. Just wait.

What is uncertain, is if the NEW iPhone will be able to be jailbroken. This will take some time. Once the new iPhone is in the public’s hands, and The iPhone Dev Team, Geohot, or the Chronic Dev Team get their hands on one, then we may get an update. If I recall correctly, is was only a couple of weeks after the iPhone 3GS was released that we had a jailbreak for it. Just wait.
Over the past couple of firmwares, we have seen all the jailbreak teams working together, to get the proper tools out to the public. At this point it looks like Geohot has a new exploit that he has been keeping quiet, that will hopefully, jailbreak the new iPhone. He has already proved it can work on all other Apple touch devices (including the iPad) on their current firmwares, but he has saved the exploit, hopefully, so he can work on the new iPhone.
