MuscleNerd, from the iPhone Dev Team, has kind of announced that there is an unlock for the current iPhone baseband, 05.12.01, and it will be released once iPhone OS 4 is officially released.

We say “kind of announced”, because MuscleNerd just casually mentioned it, in a conversation on Twitter. Here’s how it went:

They are waiting to release because, OS 4 has a new baseband already, and they don’t want to risk Apple releasing a quick 3.X update, to close the exploit in baseband 05.12.01. No word on if there is work on baseband 05.13.04, which is the current baseband for iPhone OS 4.

I’m guessing this new unlock will come in the form of an Ultrasn0w update, but will keep our eye out and update you when we find out. The new iPhone OS 4 is expected to be released early June, during WWDC, but we won’t know anything until Steve Jobs keynote, on June 7th.
