It was long rumored that the iPad Mini would be refreshed with a Retina display this year and whenever I heard this rumors I just couldn’t help but disagree. To me it would seem like way too soon for Apple to make such a revision to the tablet.
Can you imagine purchasing an iPad Mini only to have it refreshed with a screen that is 10x better than the original less than a year later? It would be a big kick to consumers and in my opinion seems too soon for Apple to implement.
Now I finally have some proof to back my opinion…
According to Taiwan’s Economic Daily News Apple may not end up releasing an iPad Mini 2 with Retina display this year after all. It looks like The Fruit Company has run into some display panel shortages that will stop it from releasing a Retina iPad Mini later this year alongside the 5th generation iPad.
It looks like the only additions to the iPad Mini 2 this year may be better specs and improved battery life. Heck maybe even a fingerprint scanner if you believe Apple is going that route… but even that is pushing it.
Economic Daily did state that Apple would likely be releasing the iPad Mini with Retina display during early 2014, making it a mid-cycle update. Just like how the third-generation iPad was replaced within 6 months with the more powerful Lighting-equipped iPad 4.
