The Next-Gen iPad Will Likely Inherit Display Technology From The iPad Mini To Make It Lighter And Thinner
Thinner and lighter seems to be two words that Apple has gotten itself accustom to. Take the iPhone 5 for example. I don’ think anyone expected or necessarily wanted Apple to make the iPhone thinner and light, but they did. In fact, I think a lot of people would of liked Apple to keep it the same size, but extend its battery life.
If you have been paying attention to the rumor mill lately, the iPad with Retina display is likely going to be going on a diet this year. According to a new report from DigiTimes, how Apple will accomplish making the iPad with Retina display lighter and thinner is by using the same G/F2 (DITO) thin-film type touch screen structure as the company’s iPad mini.
The supply chain for Apple’s next-generation 9.7-inch iPad will be similar to the iPad mini’s, with Japan-based Nitto expected to supply thin-film materials and Nissha Printing touch screen modules, noted the sources. Taiwan-based TPK will be responsible for the device’s lamination while LG Display (LGD) and Sharp will provide panels, added the sources.
Personally I think making the iPad with Retina display light and thinner like the iPad Mini would make a lot of people, including myself, want to upgrade from the iPad 3. In my opinion the smaller bezels and design of the iPad Mini makes the device look surreal.
The only problem with Apple doing this is supply chain constraints. It was rumored that the reason why the iPad Mini was priced higher than expected and saw delays was because the GF2 DITO screens were seeing manufacturing constraints. If Apple was able to solve this problem it could mean a slight price reduction in the iPad Mini as well, but probably not if rumors are true and Apple will be giving the next-generation iPad Mini a Retina display.
