How To: Enable "Voice Control" on Your iPad

So, you’ve just jailbroken your iPad, and you’re wondering: what now? Well, there are so many new things you will be able to do with your iPad, and we’ll do our best to keep you up to date.

Here’s a great tweak that is really easy to accomplish. Voice Control is something that is built in to the current iPhone OS, but was not enabled on the stock OS 3.2, on the iPad. With this simple guide, you can easily enable this feature, by adding one simple line of code to a pstring file.

So, first off, your iPad must be jailbroken. See our tutorial here. You will also need to install OpenSSH. Go into Cydia, tap the Search tab, type “open”, and you will find it on the list. Install it.

If you’re familiar with OpenSSH on your iPhone, you know what to do next, but let me go over it, in case there are some of new to this world. You need to have some kind of FTP client. On my Mac, I use Filezilla, but pretty much any FTP client will do. This is to access the root folder system of your iPad.

Open your FTP client. In the host section, type in the IP address of your iPad. It can be found at Settings>WiFi, then tap the blue arrow next to the network you are connected to. In the username field type “root”, and in the password field, type “alpine”. Use port 22, and hit return, or click go, whatever your FTP client does.

It might take a couple of tries, but you should now be able to browse the root folders of your iPad. Navigate to System>Library>CoreServices>Springboard.app, and find “K48AP.plist”. Drag it to your desktop.

Open it up in a text editor tool, and add this line of code, under the Capabilities area:

<key>voice-control</key>

<true/>

Save the file, and drag it back to System>Library>CoreServices>Springboard.app. You will be asked to overwrite, or replace; click yes or OK, or whatever your FTP client says.

Now, just reboot your iPad, and you have Voice Control! Press and long hold of the home button to activate it.

Stay tuned for more tweaks and mods for your iPad. We’re only just getting started!
