Well folks things are not looking as well as they did even a couple weeks ago for GeoHot. It seems that Sony finally has proof the GeoHot did in fact have a PlayStation 3 account, meaning that he did indeed agree to the PSN User Agreement and thus he is subject to personal jurisdiction in California. Regardless of how GeoHot’s case is coming along, only time will tell what will happen. This may be a score for Sony but GeoHot has a very good chance of gaining some more ground.
Now what we really wanted to clear up today was a rumor that spread like wildfire over the web. The rumor being that GeoHot abandoned his case and fled to South America. With no official word from GeoHot for a good part of the day, this lead people to believe this rumor was true and it started appearing on more and more sites around the web. First of all we want to tell you that this is definitely not the case. GeoHot actually just wrote a quick blog post to stop this rumor for good and put an end to the confusion:
Factually, it’s true I’m in South America, on a vacation I’ve had planned and paid for since November. I mean, it is Spring break; hacking isn’t my life. Rest assured that not a dime of legal defense money would ever go toward something like this. And of course Townsend loves the idea of painting me as an international fugitive. I have been in contact with my lawyers almost every day; I would not let the case suffer. That said, I also won’t let this ridiculous lawsuit run my life either. Then the fearmongerers win.
As you can see GeoHot definitely did not “flee” to South America. He simply left for a vacation which he planned well in advance. While it may not have come in the best time, who can blame GeoHot for wanting to be able to live a regular lifestyle. We will keep you updated on the progress of GeoHot’s lawsuit, but until then lets wish GeoHot the best of luck!
