How To: Jailbreak iOS 5 GM With RedSn0w 0.9.9b3 On iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS [MAC OS X]

On October 4, 2011, by Dusty

Earlier today the Dev-Team released RedSn0w 0.9.9b3 to Jailbreak the iOS 5 GM firmware. This new version of RedSn0w features auto iOS 5 GM firmware detection to avoid having to point RedSn0w to an earlier iOS 5 beta like in version 0.9.9b2. If you are interested in jailbreaking tethered the iOS 5 GM firmware on your iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS, follow this step-by-step guide from iJailbreak.com.

Step 1: Download RedSn0w 0.9.9b3 for Mac OS X using the download mirror below or through the iJailbreak Downloads Section.

Download RedSn0w 0.9.9b3 (Mac OS X)

Step 2: Once you have downloaded RedSn0w 0.9.9b3 you will need to simply launch it by double clicking on the redsn0w app.

Step 3: With RedSn0w 0.9.9b3 up and running you will need to click the Extras button. You will now see a few buttons presented to you. The button you are interested in is the Select IPSW button. Click this now and select your devices corresponding iOS 5 GM firmware.

Step 4: Upon selecting the firmware click the back button, followed by the Jailbreak button.

Step 5: After clicking the Jailbreak button ensure that the “Install Cydia” option is checked, click the Next button and you will come to a screen where you will need to put your iPhone into DFU mode. Read through and follow the instructions presented to you which is to plug in and power off your iPhone and click the next button.

Step 6: When you click the next button you will need to follow the instructions presented to you to put your iPhone into DFU mode.

  • Hold down Power (corner) button for 5 seconds.
  • Without releasing the Power button, also hold down the Home (bottom center) button along with the Power button for 10 seconds.
  • Without releasing the home button, stop holding down the power button for up to 15 seconds.

Step 7: After you successfully enter DFU mode RedSn0w 0.9.9b3 will begin jailbreaking your iPhone. DO NOT interrupt or use your computer during this time. When your iPhone is finished being jailbroken it will reboot into a jailbroken state. Congratulations!

Optional: Booting Tethered - When you Jailbreak your iPhone running the iOS 5 GM firmware you will have a tethered Jailbreak. Meaning in order for your iPhone to turn back on you will need to boot it using RedSn0w (this applies every time your iPhone looses power). To do this launch RedSn0w again and click the Extras Button > then click the Just boot button and you will simply need to put your iPhone into DFU mode again.

Note: Yes, you need to do this every time your iPhone looses power.

Upon following our how to guide you should now have a Jailbroken iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS running the iOS 5 GM firmware with RedSn0w 0.9.9b3. For more tutorials visit the How To Jailbreak Section. Leave any questions in the comments section below…

My phone keeps getting stuck on the circle thing when its loading. it looks like its frozen, is there a way to fix it? Should I reset my phone and do it again?

I did all the steps and it seemed like it worked, but I can’t find cydia.  Using the search function it says it is on my phone, but doesn’t show up as an app and won’t launch.  Does this only not work for 04.11.08? the how to says nothing about that.

  • iPhone 4

anyone know how I can get an international SIM to work after the jailbreak.   I either get “no service” or “Invalid SIM”  I’m using an iPhone 4 on IOS 5
