If you have not heard of GeoHot’s legal battle between Sony I would be surprised. It seems like only yesterday we were given word hacker GeoHot would be facing Sony in court for releasing the PlayStation 3 jailbreak over the internet. It was a bumpy ride for GeoHot and though GeoHot claimed he would win this legal battle, he recently signed an agreement with Sony ending the legal battle and Geohot’s days hacking Sony products.
As this lawsuit abruptly came to a halt, many people wondered what would happen to all the donations GeoHot received to fight Sony. It looks like GeoHot decided to do the right thing and donate $10,000 USD to the EFF with all the left over money that was in his possession. In case you are wondering what the EFF is, it is an organization that confronts cutting-edge issues defending free speech, privacy, innovation, and consumer rights.
GeoHots further says the future of Sony product-hacking won’t be chilled. Instead, “if you piss them off enough for them to pull out the legal team and their million dollar checkbook, worst thing that happens is you have to super swear to never do it again,” which sounds like it’s part of the settlement. He also says that his days of hacking the PS3 and other Sony products are over. While he doesn’t respect Sony, he says he does respect the court.
It looks like this is the last time we will hear from any disputes between Sony and Geohot.
