The App Store reached the massive number of 25 billion downloads over the week, with Chunli Fu of Qingdao China being the very lucky downloader of the 25th billion with the game Where’s My Water? Free, winning him a $10,000 iTunes gift card. As it did when the App Store reached 10 billion downloads last year, Apple has revealed the all-time top paid and free apps for the iPhone and iPad.
Based on downloads, Apple has divided the results into 4 categories: top 25 all time paid iPhone apps, free iPhone apps, paid iPad apps, and free iPad apps. Not surprising, the popular Angry Birds game was in the top 10 in every category.
Overall, we do see that majority of the all-time most downloaded apps are games, with few of Apple’s own apps doing well on the iPhone platform. However Apple’s own iWork suite for the iPad did very well, showing people are using the iPad for more than games. Free or “lite” versions of apps also did very good, which should be a clear sign to Apple that people want to try apps before throwing down $1-$10 to buy the full version (please Apple please!)
