Amazon announced yesterday that they’re set to release GameCircle, an OpenFeint-esque game center for the Kindle Fire. It promises to do all the usual things that OpenFeint and Apple Game Center do now, such as track achievements and global leaderboards across all games on the platform. It also offers cloud storage of all your game saves, so you can switch devices and continue where you left off.

Game developers can sign up for access to the GameCircle APIs, and there’s already a handful of games that have implemented the GameCircle features, the list of which can be seen here.

The usefulness of cloud syncing your save games will be highly limited by the fact that this service is only on Kindle Fire so far. This may change if Amazon’s rumored smartphone ever shows up, but without support for multiple devices right now, its use will be limited to people who have to replace their Kindle or reinstall the game for whatever reason.

Hopefully, Google will eventually step up and offer a service like this across all Android devices. Being able to sync your in-game progress across Kindle Fires, Galaxy S IIIs, Nexus 7s, etc. would be incredible, and it’s something we’re already starting to see in iOS games. The newest version of Tiny Wings syncs progress between the iPad and iPhone versions.
