In case you haven’t already heard Google announced yesterday the future of Android which will be Android 4.4 KitKat.
They kicked things off by creating an official Google+ page for Android 4.4 KitKat that you can check out by clicking here. This is no joke…
Google is really naming the next version of Android after the famous chocolate-covered wafer biscuit, which Google is saying is the favorite candy of the Android team. To make things official there is a giant chocolate-like status outside Google’s Mountain View, California headquarters. The official webpage for Android 4.4 KitKat has also gone live.
So I wonder how much KitKat paid Google to use it as its new operating system name…
If you ask BBC News who published a story of how the tie-up happened neither party actually paid each other anything because it would result in mutually beneficial cross-promotion.
This is Google’s take, however, on how they came up with the name:
Android is the operating system that powers over 1 billion smartphones and tablets. Since these devices make our lives so sweet, each Android version is named after a dessert: Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, and Jelly Bean.
As everybody finds it difficult to stay away from chocolate we decided to name the next version of Android after one of our favorite chocolate treats, Kit Kat!
A Google+ post further elaborates “KitKat has been a favorite candy on the team for some time, so for the KitKat release, we asked if they’d be willing to lend their iconic candy bar to its name.”
Kit Kat will also be running a promotion where you can win a Nexus 7 or Google Play credit when you buy one of their candy bars with Android robot packaging.
Besides what was mentioned on the marketing material for Android 4.4 KitKat “an amazing Android experience available for everybody,” we don’t know much about. This will of course change in the coming weeks
So it looks like not only is Samsung trying to steal Apple’s thunder with a media event they are holding today, but so is Google.
One last thing I would like to bring your attention to is KitKat’s new site. They are totally spoofing Apple’s advertising tactics, there is even a video to go along with it essentially mocking Jony Ive. It’s hilarious to say the least.
